Hotel Toyo, Nishinari: Not Just Cheap — A Place Where Travelers Leave Their Marks

目次

Intro

¥2,456 per night.

That’s all it costs to stay here.

But Hotel Toyo is not just a cheap place to sleep.

It’s a place where travelers pass through — and leave something behind.

📸 First Impression

A simple entrance with a bright blue sign.

Nothing fancy.

But right next to it — a small coffee stand.

Already, it feels a little different.

📸 The Room

A tiny tatami room.

  • Futon (top & bottom)
  • Electric blanket
  • Small TV

The tatami is not real straw — it’s vinyl.

Some travelers don’t like the smell of traditional tatami,

so this is a practical choice.

No USB outlets.

You can buy a cable at the front (¥800),

or walk to Don Quijote nearby.

📸 The Social Space

This is where Toyo becomes something else.

Walls covered in messages.

Names, drawings, memories from travelers all over the world.

A shared space with kotatsu tables,

a rice cooker, and a kitchen corner.

👉 This is not decoration.

👉 This is history.

📸 The People Behind It

Behind all the noise and chaos —

there are people quietly holding it together.

Staff here are used to international travelers.

English is no problem.

Some can also speak Korean and Spanish.

When I told them I was writing this article,

they smiled and asked me to send the link.

👉 This place remembers people.

👉 And people remember this place.

📸 Who Stays Here

When I stayed, almost no Japanese guests.

Mostly Western travelers.

During Chinese New Year, the balance shifts —

more Chinese, Taiwanese, and Korean guests.

👉 The atmosphere changes with the season.

📸 Facilities

  • Showers: 24 hours
  • Toilets: clean and modern
  • Toothbrush & towels sold
  • Bicycle rental available

Doors are locked at 11 PM,

but you can enter with a password.

The 5th floor is for long-term stays.

📸 Rooftop

A quiet rooftop space above Nishinari.

Sit down. Breathe.

Below is chaos.

Up here — calm.

📸 Location

Everything is close.

  • Janjan Yokocho: right across the street
  • Irifune Onsen (tatoo-friendly) : 2 min walk
  • Fukunari restaurant: 5 min
  • Tsutenkaku area: walking distance
  • Square Park: 5 min

👉 You don’t need transport.

👉 You just walk.

📸 The Reality You Should Know

During this trip, I ran into multiple places that were

“open on Google” — but actually closed.

  • Hot pot place (with notice)
  • Famous takoyaki shop (no notice)
  • Popular yakiniku (no notice)
  • Irifune Onsen (with notice)

👉 Always have a backup plan.
