Kura Sushi 101: High-Tech Hygiene & Entertainment

If you are looking for a sushi experience that combines health, high-tech hygiene, and pure entertainment, Kura Sushi (くら寿司) is your destination.

Unlike other chains that focus purely on volume or toppings, Kura Sushi has carved out a unique position as the “safest and most fun” sushi chain in Japan. With its patented protective domes and famous capsule toy games, it is especially popular with families and health-conscious diners.

Here is everything you need to know to navigate Kura Sushi like a pro.

Concept: Safety & Health (The “Four Major Additive-Free” Policy)

Kura Sushi prides itself on a strict health policy. They do not use the four major additives in any of their ingredients (over 200 types), including the sushi, soy sauce, vinegar, and broth.

  • No Chemical Seasonings
  • No Artificial Sweeteners
  • No Synthetic Colorants
  • No Artificial Preservatives

This commitment makes it the top choice for parents and those sensitive to food additives.

Key Feature 1: The “Sendo-kun” (Mr. Fresh) Dome

The most distinct feature of Kura Sushi is the transparent dome covering every plate on the belt. This is called “Sendo-kun” (Mr. Fresh).

Why is it there?

Developed over 10 years and protected by patents, this system was created to protect sushi from airborne bacteria, viruses, and dust. Long before the global pandemic raised hygiene awareness, Kura Sushi was already sealing its food.

[Insert Image: Graph showing antibacterial effectiveness] As shown in the data above, the “Anti-bacterial Sushi Cover” drastically reduces the presence of bacteria compared to open plates.

How to use it (Don’t Panic!)

First-time visitors often struggle to open the dome. Do not try to open the plastic cover itself.

  1. Look for the small opening/slot at the front of the plate.
  2. Simply lift the plate upward by grabbing the plate edge.
  3. The dome will automatically pop open and stay on the belt.

Key Feature 2: Bikkura Pon! (The Game)

Eating at Kura Sushi is a game—literally.

  1. Eat Sushi: Finished plates are not left on the table. You slide them into a disposal slot at the side of your table.
  2. Count: The system automatically counts your plates.
  3. The Game: For every 5 plates you insert, an animation plays on your touch panel.
  4. Win: If you get “Atari” (Win), a Gachapon capsule toy (usually featuring an anime collaboration like Demon Slayer or Detective Conan) rolls out of a machine above your table.

Pro Tip: “Bikkura Pon! Plus” The standard win rate is not guaranteed. However, Kura Sushi recently introduced a “Plus” system. By paying an extra ¥10 per plate, the win rate changes to 1 in 3 games guaranteed. You can select this option on the tablet before you start eating.

Budget & Dining Tips

  • Budget: ¥1,500 – ¥2,500 per person.
  • Ordering: Use the multilingual touch panel (English available).

Whether you are there for the safe and hygienic “Sendo-kun” system or trying to win a toy with “Bikkura Pon,” Kura Sushi offers a uniquely Japanese dining entertainment experience.
