Introduction Are you tired of the crowded streets of Shibuya? Do you want to experience the “real” Japan that locals love? I’m Akira, a Tokyo native with over 50 years of experience exploring this city. Today, I’m taking you on a perfect day trip to Sano and Ashikaga in Tochigi Prefecture. This route covers everything: premium outlet shopping, authentic history, world-class flower gardens, and arguably the best Ramen in Japan.
Here is your efficient, time-saving itinerary.

🚌 The Strategy: Bus is Best
Many guidebooks suggest trains, but trust me: The Highway Bus is king here.
- Why? It’s cheaper, faster, and requires Zero Transfers.
- Route: Shinjuku ➡ Sano Premium Outlets directly.
🗓️ Morning: Shop ‘til You Drop
🕙 08:10 | Depart from Busta Shinjuku
Start your day at Busta Shinjuku (Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal).
- Bus Name: Marronier Shinjuku No. 1
- Target: Sano Premium Outlets
- Fare: ¥1,600 (One way)
- Pro Tip: Buy a round-trip ticket! You can buy it at the counter or online.

🕘 09:38 | Arrival: Sano Premium Outlets
You have arrived before the doors open at 10:00 AM. Perfect timing.
🛍️ What is an Outlet? Think of it as a treasure hunt. Makers sell samples, out-of-season items, or factory-direct goods at 20-30% off. Lucky shoppers might find deals up to 80% off during sales!
✨ Highlights:
- Size: Massive. Imagine 4 or 5 baseball stadiums combined.
- Vibe: Surprisingly relaxing. I didn’t see many other foreign tourists—this is a local secret.
- Dragon Quest Fans: Keep your ears open! Since Square Enix has a shop here, you might hear the iconic Dragon Quest theme music. Don’t miss the giant Slime statue!

🍽️ Lunch: The “God-Tier” Cost Performance
🕦 11:30 | Taxi to “Tsuruten” (鶴天)
Skip the outlet food court. We are going where the locals go. A short taxi ride takes us to Tsuruten.
- Why here? Incredible value and proximity to our next stop.
- The Order: “Double Donburi Set” (Mini Tempura Bowl + Mini Tuna Bowl).
- The Verdict:
- Tempura: One shrimp, four veggies. Crispy, savory sauce. Perfection.
- Tuna: Sashimi, negitoro (minced tuna), and egg.
- Price: Only ¥750 (Tax included). This includes miso soup, salad, pickles, and fruit.
- Atmosphere: The building is old and rustic, but the food is 5-star quality.

🛕 Culture: The Warder of Evil
🕐 12:45 | Sano Yakuyoke Daishi

Just a 500m walk(4~5 Minutes) from lunch. Founded in 937 AD, this temple is famous for “Yakuyoke” (Warding off Evil). During New Year’s, over 700,000 people flock here to pray for a safe year.

🚌 13:20 | CRITICAL MOVE: Bus to Sano Station
⚠️ Attention: To get to Sano Station, you have two choices.
- Walk (17 mins):
2.Bus (Recommended): There is a bus stop right in front of the temple gate.
- Time: 13:20 sharp.
- Warning: If you miss this, the next one is in 2 hours. Do not miss this bus.

A 5-minute walk from the station transports you back to the Samurai era. This is Japan’s Oldest Academic Institution. Its origins are mysterious (9th century?), but it flourished in the 1400s.
- Entry: ¥480
- Souvenir: You receive a generic “Student ID” and “Certificate of Admission” styled in beautiful calligraphy. A great keepsake!
- Experience: The thatched roofs and serene gardens are a history lover’s dream. It takes about 30 minutes to explore.

2. The Garden of Light: Illumination (October – February) Recognized as one of the Three Great Illuminations of Japan.

🚌 The Homestretch: Back to Tokyo
🕖 19:20 | Local Bus to Terminal

Go to the South Exit of Sano Station. Look for the blue micro-bus named “Sa-notte”.
- Depart: 19:20 ➡ Arrive: 19:37 (Sano New City Bus Terminal)
- Note: There is a later bus at 20:05, but the 19:20 gives you breathing room.
In case you are late, you can use a taxi in stead of “Sa-notte” at Sano Station. A taxi stop is right next to “Sa-notte” Bus Stop

The Sano Station taxi dispatch center is located right across from the taxi stand, so you can catch a cab at any time.
If you plan to take a taxi directly to the Sano New City Bus Terminal, simply show the following Japanese text to your driver:
“Please go to Sano New City Bus Terminal.” 「佐野新都市バスターミナルに行ってください。」
🕣 20:29 | Highway Bus to Shinjuku
Relax in the waiting room at the terminal.
- Depart: 20:29 (Bus Stop No. 2)

🛠️ Part 2: Sano & Ashikaga Survival Guide (Travel Hacks)
In this section, I have compiled essential tips to make your trip smoother. Since this area is outside of central Tokyo, English signs can be scarce, and transportation works differently. Save this page!
1. The “Coin Locker” Strategy
Handling large luggage is the key to enjoying the outlets comfortably.
Plan A (The “Pro” Move): Sano New City Bus Terminal Lockers

- Why: This is where your return bus departs. If you leave your luggage here, you don’t have to carry it back to the outlet information center later. You can just finish shopping and hop on the bus!
- Note: Lockers here are standard size. Very large suitcases might not fit.
🚶 Shortcut Guide: From Outlets to Bus Terminal Don’t worry about getting lost; the two locations are connected by a direct path (about 250m / 5 mins).

- Find the Playground: Look for the area where you see a small children’s playground on your right-hand side.
- Walk Straight: From that playground, simply walk straight ahead.
- Arrival: You will walk right into the Sano New City Bus Terminal.
- Boarding: For the highway bus back to Shinjuku, please wait at Platform #2.
(Insert Mini-Album: Playground landmark -> The straight path -> Bus Terminal Entrance)
Plan B (The “Standard” Move): Outlet Information Center
- Where: Located in the middle of the outlet mall (Look for the narrow path next to the Coach store).

- Cost: ¥800 per bag.
- Bonus: They can call a taxi for you. There is an ATM and coin lockers here too.

- Please show it to a staff in the information center in case you call a taxi.
((Excuse me, could you please call a taxi for me? Destination: Tsuruten。3245-3 Oohashi-cho Sano City. We will wait at the Taxi and Bus Stop in front of the outlets.)
Useful Numbers for Staff: Asahi Taxi: 0283-22-3311 Sano Godo Taxi: 0283-22-5333

C. The “Luggage Retrieval” Run (Crucial!)
Use this if you left your suitcase at the Outlet Information Center (Plan B) and need to pick it up before going to the bus terminal. Show this to the driver at Sano Station.
佐野新都市バスターミナルへ行く前に、「佐野プレミアム・アウトレット」のインフォメーションセンターに立ち寄ってください。 そこで預けたスーツケースを回収して、そのあとバスターミナルへ向かいたいです。
(Please take me to the Sano New City Bus Terminal, BUT please stop at the Sano Premium Outlet Information Center first. I need to pick up my checked luggage there, then proceed to the bus terminal.)
3. The “Flower Park Station” Trap
Be careful at Ashikaga Flower Park Station. It is a very small station with only one platform for trains going in both directions.
- To go back to Sano/Tokyo: You usually need to board the train arriving from the Left and moving to the Right.
- ⚠️ Warning: Check the destination sign on the train. Look for “Oyama” (小山).
- Do NOT get on the train going to Kiryu/Takasaki (unless you want to go deeper into the mountains!).

5. Important Seasonal Note regarding Illumination
The “Garden of Illuminated Flowers” at Ashikaga Flower Park is one of the top night views in Japan. However, please note the schedule:
- Illumination Season: Generally mid-October to mid-February.
- Spring/Summer: The park closes earlier (usually around 17:30 or 18:00), and there are NO night lights.
- Action: Please check the official website for the exact schedule before you go to avoid disappointment.
